An electromyographic study of masticatory muscle activity at increased occlusal vertical dimension in complete denture wearers.

چکیده
I t is a common clinical experience that patients wearing complete dentures at an increased occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) will suffer discomfort and complain that the dentures feel “too big.” At one time this discomfort was said to be an attempt of the muscles of mastication to return the mandible to its predetermined rest position.’ However, the concept that mandibular rest position is stable throughout life is no longer accepted,“5 but that the mandible can adapt to a rest position at an OVD Provided by the dentures.6 The idea now proposed is that at an increased OVD there is increased muscle activity during function, instead of an attempt to return the mandible to a rest position. This investigation tested this idea by recording the quantitative level of muscle activity occurring during function at increased OVD. The activity levels were recorded on an electromyograph (EMG), and a summation integrator was used to permit accurate measurement of the recorded activity.

The influence of the occlusal vertical dimension on masticatory muscle activities and hyoid bone position in complete denture wearers.
PURPOSE Long lasting usage of complete dentures causes lower occlusal vertical dimension, producing potential detrimental consequences. The aim of this study was to investigate how changes in vertical dimension during denture exchange affect muscular activity and hyoid bone position. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-five edentulous, otherwise healthy patients (14 females, 11 males) aged 70.5 +/- 9...
متن کاملElectromyographic evaluation of masticatory function in denture wearers in related to existing occlusal support.
The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between partially edentulous pattern and the masticatory function in removable partial denture wearers. Eighty eight removable partial denture wearers and 7 subjects with intact dentition volunteered for this study. Using the Eichner's index, all subjects were divided into 6 groups. Electromyographic (EMG) activities of the masticatory muscl...

PURPOSE To compare the changes in the occlusal vertical dimension, activity of masseter muscles and biting force after insertion of immediate denture constructed with conventional, tooth-supported and Implant-supported immediate mandibular complete denture. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients were selected and treatment was carried out with all the three different concepts i.e, immediate denture c...
متن کاملImmediate Effect of Occlusal Errors on Masticatory Muscle Activity in Denture Wearers: A Pilot Study
Over the past three decades, little scientific progress has been made relative to occlusion in conventional complete dentures. Equal distribution of functional load throughout the residual denture foundation is likely an important factor in prosthesis stability and patient acceptance of dentures. A better understanding the relationship between denture occlusion and the physiologic behavior of m...
متن کاملMasticatory efficiency in denture wearers with bilateral balanced occlusion and canine guidance.
The maintenance of masticatory function is especially important for patients wearing complete dentures due to their limitations. Thus, the bilateral balanced occlusal concept is used to achieve greater masticatory efficiency. However, a critical review of the literature reveals that there is not sufficient scientific evidence to support bilateral balanced occlusion as the most appropriate occlu...
